Importance of safety training in construction

Pennsylvania residents who have worked in construction may know how much safer the industry is today compared to 50 years ago. However, there are still dangers that need to be addressed. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were 937 construction workers who were killed in 2015. That was the most in the sector since 2008, and it represented the highest death toll in any industry in that year.

According to a report from AGC, employment levels in the construction industry have been at their highest since 2008. In 2017, construction companies plan on hiring even more workers. This may mean that companies are forced to hire those who are just out of school or otherwise have little experience in the trade. Companies will need to put a priority on training workers to ensure that they work in a safe manner.

OSHA lists falls, electrocution and being struck by items as common types of injuries that employers should safeguard against. Injuries resulting from getting caught in or between items is another top OSHA priority. Collectively, they accounted for slightly more than 600 construction worker deaths in 2015. Safety experts urge small contractors to reach out to OSHA or to larger contractors in an effort to find ways to provide safety training for their employees.

Those who are injured on the job may be entitled to workers' compensation benefits. Such benefits may make it easier to pay bills or otherwise deal with expenses while out of work. In most cases, benefits are given on a temporary basis. However, it is possible that they are extended on a permanent basis depending on the scope of a worker's injuries.
