Non-invasive treatment of damaged brain tissue

Exciting forms of therapy are available to Pennsylvanians who suffer from traumatic brain injuries. These nascent technologies give hope of treating the injury directly, arresting the damage as it increases and improving prognosis in a notoriously complicated area.

Brain trauma brings with it the possibility of cascading symptoms that can contribute to the damage that resulted from the initial wound. A traumatic brain injury, or TBI, can cause inflammation and a high level of free radicals in the brain, as well as the disruption of signaling to the point that cells can die.

Treating affected areas of the brain directly with medication has proven to be effective but invasive. The intrusion into the brain matter required to treat the affected areas can in itself cause harm. Now researchers have discovered a sophisticated new way to carry medication to the brain directly. They have identified a peptide sequence that differentiates damaged brain tissue from healthy brain tissue. This would allow them to attach medications to this peptide sequence and inject them anywhere into the patient's bloodstream, and the natural processes of the body will carry the medication to the right area. This could eliminate the need for invasive medication dispensation in many circumstances.

People who have incurred a traumatic brain injury often face a lifetime of expensive rehabilitation and therapy. In many cases, they are unable to ever return to gainful employment, further worsening their financial state. Although often associated with contact sports, TBIs can also be incurred in a car accident or a slip and fall. When the injury is due to another party's negligence, an attorney can often assist a victim in seeking compensation through a personal injury lawsuit.
