Risky driving behaviors prevalent among millennials

A study shows that younger millennials in Pennsylvania and elsewhere are likelier to engage in risky driving behaviors. The survey was conducted with drivers of all ages, and the researchers broke down those who responded by their age groups.

According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, 88 percent of drivers between the ages of 19 and 24 admitted to engaging in a number of different risky driving practices. The drivers admitted to engaging in such things as speeding, running red lights and texting and driving at least once in the month prior to the survey. A total of 2,511 drivers participated in the study, which was conducted via telephone from Aug. 25 through Sept. 6, 2016.

Millennials were significantly more likely to text while driving as compared to people in other age groups. Those between the ages of 19 and 24 were nearly two times as likely to text and drive than others. They were also more likely to report running red lights even in cases when they could have safely stopped. Almost half reported doing so while just 36 percent of drivers in other age groups did. The researchers stated that it was very important that drivers understand the potential consequences of risky driving behaviors.

Most car accidents are preventable and are caused by human errors. Risky driving behaviors may result in serious injuries or fatalities to occupants of other vehicles. Victims of negligent drivers might want to consult with personal injury attorneys in order to recover the maximum compensation that they deserve. Legal counsel may be able to negotiate settlements for reasonable amounts. If necessary, experienced personal injury attorneys may advocate for their clients by taking their cases to court.
