How to create a safety culture at work

Pennsylvania employers may have an easier time gaining the trust of their workers by taking steps to keep them safe. This is generally true whether a worker is in an office setting or in a factory. Roughly 21 percent of all OSHA recordable events have a realistic or reasonable potential to cause significant injuries to workers.

One approach to workplace safety is referred to as a serious injury and fatality prevention program. It looks to see whether or not a company’s safety program is actually working or if an employer has simply had good luck when it comes to injuries or fatalities on the job. As part of a SIF prevention program, safety managers should interact with employees by asking questions about the safety risks that they may face.

In addition to asking for employee feedback, employers should allow workers to report hazards without fear of reprisal. Top leaders within an organization should be made aware of SIF prevention programs and given data to show how it can help a company. As anyone may be at risk for an injury regardless of what they do or the setting that they work in, almost any company could benefit from improved worker safety protocols.

Despite adherence to all safety protocols, people will unfortunately continue to be injured on the job. Most workers are eligible to file a claim for workers’ compensation benefits, which could pay medical bills and in some cases provide a portion of an injured worker’s salary during the recovery period. An experienced lawyer can often be of assistance with the preparation and submission of the claim.
