Potential complications following a concussion

If you suffer a concussion, such as in a car accident or slip and fall, you're sure to experience a variety of symptoms. While it's your hope that these go away sooner rather than later, there's no way of knowing the impact the injury will have on the rest of your life.

Some of the most common symptoms of a concussion include:

  • Feeling of pressure in your head
  • Headache
  • Confusion
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Blurry vision
  • Vomiting
  • Nausea
  • Slurred speech
  • Fatigue

Some of these symptoms come about immediately, while others may not set in for several hours or days.

After receiving treatment, you can work closely with your medical team to make a full recovery. However, as you do so, it's important to realize that there are potential complications. These include:

  • Headaches: It's possible that you could experience headaches for several months following your concussion.
  • Vertigo: A concussion, or any head injury, can result in a spinning or dizzy sensation for as long as several months.
  • Cumulative effect: One concussion is bad enough, but if you suffer this injury time after time it can have a cumulative effect on your brain and overall level of health.

If you suffer a concussion in an accident, don't wait to receive medical treatment. This isn't the type of injury you should attempt to treat on your own, as it could result in more harm than good.

Once you're on the right track, learn more about the cause of the accident, who was at fault and the many ways you can hold the negligent party responsible for your brain injury.
