4 mental symptoms of a serious brain injury

People often understand some of the physical symptoms associated with brain injuries. These include not being able to keep your balance, severe headaches or seizures. While it is very important to know what these symptoms mean and when you need to get medical help, remember that it is not all about the physical issues. Many mental symptoms can also show up, even if you seem fine physically.

Every case is unique, and brain injuries can look different in different people. There are too many variables, such as the severity or the part of the brain that suffered an injury.

Here are four mental symptoms that could mean you have a traumatic brain injury (TBI):

  • You keep slurring your words, even though you are trying to talk clearly, as if there is a disconnect between your brain and your mouth.
  • You feel profoundly confused, perhaps not remembering where you are, how you got there or even what day of the week it is.
  • You lose consciousness, even for a short time.
  • You act differently than normal, often acting out against others. Maybe you're normally a mild-mannered individual, for instance, but you start being combative, agitated and aggressive.

Brain injuries should always be taken very seriously, no matter what symptoms present themselves. They can be life-changing. You need to seek medical care at the first sign of injury.

Afterward, make sure you also look into the legal rights you have to seek compensation for that care from any individuals or entities that bear responsibility for your injury. An experienced attorney can help you work to do that.
