Injuries and a death occur after driver speeds into wrong lane

Pittsburgh streets can get very busy, with traffic to and from businesses mixing with families traveling between school, shopping and home. Unfortunately, the sheer number of cars and trucks out on the roads can make for dangerous driving conditions and motor vehicle accidents and personal injuries. That happened recently in a fiery multi-vehicle crash in eastern Pennsylvania.

The Berks County crash occurred at about 10:55 a.m. on a recent morning. A BMW driver, who was not wearing a seat belt, was driving at high speed in the northbound lane of a two-lane road. In a misguided attempt to pass northbound traffic on a downhill curve, the BMW driver suddenly veered into the southbound lane.

That action had predictably tragic results. The BMW struck a northbound car and then smashed headfirst into into a southbound SUV. The devastation continued after that, with the BMW colliding with a second SUV. The BMW then stopped at a guard rail and caught fire. The BMW driver was ejected from his vehicle and suffered severe injuries, including blunt force trauma, of which he later died.

Occupants of the northbound car refused medical treatment, though they were undoubtedly shaken up by the crash. Both the driver and the passenger of the southbound SUV that got hit head-on had to be taken to a local hospital by ambulance. They are believed to have suffered serious injuries. The driver and passenger of the other SUV miraculously escaped injuries, as did the driver of another car who was hit by flying debris. Everyone involved in the accident, except for the BMW driver who caused it, was wearing seat belts.
